Ramp MCP overview

Overview

Ramp MCP lets you securely connect Ramp with AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Notion. Whether it is analyzing spend trends, auditing transactions, completing expenses, or managing approvals, Ramp allows users to manage their finances from wherever they are already working.

Your Ramp permissions come with you. The Ramp connection respects each user's role and access. The AI tool can only see data and take actions that the signed-in user can already perform in Ramp. Ramp attributes MCP calls to the signed-in user.

Set up Ramp MCP

Choose your AI tool below. You need a Ramp account and access to your chosen AI platform. For sandbox accounts, see the FAQ below.

When the authorization screen offers an access choice, select Read-only to view data without making changes, or Full access to also make changes. Your existing Ramp permissions still apply.

Claude

One-click installation from Claude's MCP directory. Sign in to your Ramp account when prompted.

ChatGPT

One-click installation from the ChatGPT app directory.

Notion

Notion AI can connect to Ramp MCP as an external data source. You can install Ramp from Notion's connector marketplace, or use a custom configuration in Notion's MCP connections settings with the server URL https://mcp.ramp.com/mcp. See Notion's documentation for configuring external MCP servers.

Coding agents

For coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor, we recommend using the Ramp CLI.

Other MCP-compatible tools

Other AI clients that support remote MCP servers and OAuth can connect using the server URL https://mcp.ramp.com/mcp. Clients with a hosted redirect URL must have it allowlisted by Ramp; see How do I get my redirect URI allowlisted for a custom MCP client?.

Your first prompt

Once you're connected, the easiest way to confirm everything is working is to just ask something. Try one of these to start:

• Employees: "What Ramp cards do I have, and what are their balances?"
• Admins: "Show me our top five vendors by spend this month."

From there, experiment. Natural language works — you don't need to know the "right" phrasing. If something doesn't work the first time, try rewording it or asking the assistant what it can do with Ramp. For more ideas, see What you can do with Ramp below.

Managing employee access

Connected-tool review is available only when Connected AI tools appears in Ramp. Admins who can view other users and manage their team's or company's AI connections can use it. See Manage connected AI tools.

Admins can choose whether all employees, no employees, or specific employees can connect. Open Integrations, select Ramp MCP, and choose Manage access.

Available on Ramp Plus. Admins can also control access by role with the Manage connections to Ramp via MCP, CLI and other AI connectors permission at Settings > Roles and permissions. See Customizing roles and permissions and Ramp Plus overview.

What you can do with Ramp

For Finance Admins and Bookkeepers

Close the books faster. Find missing receipts and memos, apply GL coding to transactions and reimbursements, tag tracking categories, leave comments, and ping team members when something needs attention.

Stay on top of spend. Pull top vendors, flag anomalies, analyze spend data, and check Ramp Banking and Ramp Checking Account balances for a cash snapshot.

• "Show me our top software vendors by spend this quarter, and flag anything that grew more than 20% QoQ."
• "Get all Ramp Banking account balances for today's cash snapshot."

Review and approve. See what's pending your review and take action on transactions, reimbursements, bills pending your approval, and unified requests (purchase orders and fund requests). Final bill approval can trigger payment automatically; review the bill approval conditions.

• "Approve all transactions under $100 that have a clear business memo."

Query your data. Ask questions across spending limits, Spend Programs, vendors, users, departments, entities, purchase orders, transactions, reimbursements, and bills.

For Employees

Finish your expenses. Add memos, split categories, assign to a trip, tag attendees, and submit or resubmit reimbursements — all in chat. For receipt files, see Can I upload receipts through Ramp MCP?.

Manage your cards. See what you have, lock or unlock a card, activate a card by the last four digits, and generate agent card credentials for one-time payments.

Check balances and limits. See your funds, budgets, and remaining limits before you spend.

Plan and reconcile trips. Create a trip, view your flight and hotel bookings, and connect transactions to the right trip.

Not seeing a tool you expected? Try disconnecting and reconnecting Ramp in your AI tool — new tools are added regularly, and your session may need a fresh connection to pick them up. You can also submit feedback directly from any connected AI tool by asking it to "submit feedback to Ramp about [your feedback here]."

Troubleshooting

Authentication fails or connection drops

Try the fix for your specific tool first:

• Claude: Disconnect and reconnect Ramp in Settings > Connectors .
• ChatGPT: Disconnect and reconnect the Ramp app in Settings > Apps .
• Notion: Remove and re-add the Ramp connection in Notion's MCP settings.
• Coding agents using Ramp MCP: Remove and re-add the Ramp connection in your MCP client, then restart the agent session.
• Coding agents using the Ramp CLI: Run ramp auth logout --env production, then ramp auth login --env production. Replace production with sandbox if you use a sandbox Ramp account.

In every case, make sure you are signing in to the correct Ramp account (production vs. sandbox).

Tools not appearing or not responding

• Restart your AI tool after connecting or changing settings.
• Confirm the server URL for your account: use https://mcp.ramp.com/mcp for production or https://demo-mcp.ramp.com/mcp for sandbox, with no trailing slash or extra characters.
• Disconnect and reconnect Ramp so the client picks up any newly released tools.

For coding agents with a custom MCP setup

The following steps apply only to coding agents that use a custom MCP configuration. If you use Ramp CLI, Claude, ChatGPT, or Notion, skip this section.

• Clear cached MCP credentials: If your MCP client uses ~/.mcp-auth, run rm -rf ~/.mcp-auth in your terminal, then reconnect.
• Reset Ramp CLI authentication: Run ramp auth logout --env production, then ramp auth login --env production. Replace production with sandbox if you use a sandbox Ramp account.
• Restart your MCP client: After reconnecting Ramp MCP, restart your editor or terminal session so the MCP client picks up the updated connection.
• Local config errors: If you are using a custom local MCP configuration instead of the Ramp CLI, verify the config syntax and then restart your agent.

Permission errors

If a tool returns a permissions error, your Ramp permissions or connection access may not allow that action.

Ask the assistant: “Run ramp_token_info and explain any missing OAuth scopes or authorization-level restrictions for the tool I’m trying to use.”

This diagnoses connection-level restrictions, not every Ramp role, resource, or feature permission. A tool reported as available can still fail when fetching data.

If you believe you should have access, ask your Ramp Admin to check your access settings in Company > Integrations > Ramp MCP > Manage access.

For developers and IT Admins

What is the difference between Ramp MCP and the Ramp Developer API?

Ramp MCP is designed for use with AI assistants — it lets you interact with Ramp data using natural language through tools like Claude and ChatGPT. The Ramp Developer API is a REST API for building custom integrations and applications programmatically. In many cases, Ramp MCP already supports actions (like editing transactions or approving reimbursements) that would otherwise require building a custom app against the API. If you are not sure which to use, start with Ramp MCP.

Where can I find the Ramp CLI?

The Ramp CLI is a separate terminal tool for developers. Install it by running curl -fsSL https://agents.ramp.com/install.sh | sh in your terminal. Documentation is available at docs.ramp.com.

How do I get my redirect URI allowlisted for a custom MCP client?

If you are building a custom MCP client that connects to Ramp, your redirect URI must be allowlisted. Submit a redirect URI allowlist request with the exact redirect URI(s) you need added. Note the following requirements:

• A valid redirect URI must use https://, be on localhost or 127.0.0.1, or use claude://, cursor://, grokbot://, or perplexity-app://.
• Wildcard subdomains (for example, https://\*.example.com/callback ) are not supported. Each URI must specify an exact host.

Can I connect Ramp MCP through a third-party MCP gateway or proxy?

Yes, but your gateway's redirect URI must be added to the allowlist by Ramp first. If you are using a service like Glean, MintMCP, GoSearch, or another MCP gateway, submit a redirect URI allowlist request with the redirect URI your gateway uses. If your organization builds and hosts MCP proxies, see the redirect URI FAQ above for requirements.

Can I use Ramp MCP with Microsoft Copilot for 365?

To connect Ramp data to Copilot, you can use Copilot Studio's MCP server integration to add Ramp MCP as a tool for a Copilot agent. Alternatively, you can connect to the Ramp Developer API using Copilot Studio's custom API connector or Power Automate.

Frequently asked questions

I only see a few tools (like "get current user" and "ask Help Center"). Where are the rest?

Available tools depend on your Ramp permissions and connection access. See Permission errors to diagnose access restrictions, or reconnect Ramp to refresh your connection.

Can the AI assistant approve things on my behalf?

Yes. If you are an approver, the Ramp connection can approve or reject transactions, reimbursements, bills pending your approval, and unified requests (including purchase orders and fund requests) on your behalf. All actions respect your existing Ramp permissions.

Some bill actions require additional verification. If the assistant provides a Ramp link to complete the action, open it in your browser.

Approving a bill can cause it to proceed to payment automatically when it becomes fully approved, payment details and a payment date are already set, and your company’s payment-release settings allow it.

Can I upload receipts through Ramp MCP?

If your connection offers Ramp’s receipt upload card and your AI tool can display interactive cards, ask the assistant to upload a receipt, then choose your file in the card. The card sends the file directly to Ramp. Availability depends on your connection and AI tool.

A coding agent with access to your local receipt file and a shell with network access can use Ramp’s receipt upload link tool to upload a missing receipt. The agent uses the one-time link to transfer the file; the link does not open in a browser.

Attaching a file to a chat does not automatically upload it to Ramp. If neither upload method is available, upload the file directly in Ramp; see Submitting receipts and expenses. Developers building a custom integration can also use the Ramp Developer API receipt endpoint.

Can I try Ramp MCP with a sandbox or demo account?

Sandbox Ramp accounts cannot connect through the production Ramp MCP server at https://mcp.ramp.com/mcp.

To work with sandbox Ramp data in a coding agent, use the Ramp CLI and replace production with sandbox in the Ramp CLI authentication commands.
