Manage connected AI tools
Overview
Connected AI tools are the AI assistants — such as Claude, ChatGPT, or Perplexity — that your employees connect to Ramp through the Ramp CLI and the official Ramp MCP server. This article is for Admins who oversee those connections: reviewing what's connected and controlling who can connect. If you're an employee looking to connect a tool, see Ramp MCP.
How connected AI tools work
- A connected tool uses the employee's permissions. It can only access what that employee's Ramp role allows — it can never do more than they can.
- Its actions are attributed to the employee. Ramp attributes MCP calls to the employee who connected the tool. The Ramp Audit Log shows individual product changes only when that action normally creates an audit event.
- Access refreshes automatically. While a connection is in use it stays active and re-authenticates in the background. If a connection goes unused long enough to lapse, the employee reconnects from their AI tool to restore it.
Review connected AI tools
The Connected AI tools page is available only when connected-tool review is enabled for your business. Admins who can view other users and manage their team's or company's AI connections can review connected tools at Settings > Developer > Connected AI tools.
This is a read-only overview of the AI tools connected to your company's Ramp data — showing who connected each one, its status, and when it was last used.
If the page is not available, use the integration's Manage access settings to control who can connect. See Ramp MCP.
Control who can connect
You can control who can connect AI tools at two levels:
- Company-wide (all plans). An Admin can turn AI-tool access on or off for the whole business, or limit it to specific users or teams. Open Integrations, select Ramp MCP, and choose Manage access.
- Per role (Ramp Plus). On Ramp Plus, an Admin can control access at the role level by enabling the Manage connections to Ramp via MCP, CLI and other AI connectors permission at Settings > Roles and permissions. See Customizing roles and permissions.

How do employees connect an AI tool?

Can a connected AI tool do more than the employee who connected it?
No. A connected tool inherits that employee's Ramp permissions and can never do more than they can.
Who can connect AI tools?
Employees can connect when AI-tool access is enabled for your company and their role allows it. Company-wide access is set by opening Integrations, selecting Ramp MCP, and choosing Manage access (all plans). Per-role control requires Ramp Plus (see Ramp Plus overview). On Ramp Plus, enable the Manage connections to Ramp via MCP, CLI and other AI connectors permission at Settings > Roles and permissions.
Can I remove a tool an employee connected?
The Connected AI tools page is currently a read-only overview. Access lapses automatically when a connection goes unused. To change access going forward, open Integrations, select Ramp MCP, and choose Manage access, or adjust the Manage connections to Ramp via MCP, CLI and other AI connectors permission at Settings > Roles and permissions (Ramp Plus).
What happens when a connection expires?
The tool stops working until the employee reconnects from their AI tool.
