Logging in with Passkeys – Ramp

Overview

Within the Ramp app you can now log in with passkeys. Passkeys have become popular as a login method since they provide both speed and security. Unlike passwords, passkeys are resistant to phishing, are always strong, and are designed to exchange no secrets between the Ramp app and your credential manager of choice. To that end, passkeys are stored in your password manager (e.g. device, a password manager like 1Password, etc.) and are protected by the device's security (e.g. biometrics, YubiKey, Face ID, etc.). Passkeys are faster and safer than passwords, but you can still use both when logging into Ramp.

Note that Ramp does not have access to your PIN or biometric data.

Below are the instructions to advise customers on setting up their passkeys. There are two methods for enabling them: the security tab and the login campaign.

Setting up passkeys from the security tab

Navigate to Settings > Personal settings > Security.
You'll see the new button "Configure passkeys" in Beta.
The browser will open a new pop-up window with your email. Click Continue.
Your device will prompt you to log in to save these settings.
You'll then have to name the passkey.

Setting up passkeys upon login

Upon logging in, you'll see a page titled "Simplify your next log-in" with initial instructions to create a passkey.
Depending on your authentication status, you may be prompted to enter an MFA code when you click to proceed.
The browser will open a new pop-up window with your email. Click Continue.
Your device will prompt you to log in to save these settings.
You'll then have to name the passkey.

Why should I use passkeys?

If your business currently uses passwords and does not have access to SSO (Google or SAML) to log into Ramp, passkeys provide a much more secure alternative. They are a FIDO credential and offer greater security as a standalone solution compared to the typical MFA combination of password plus OTP via SMS or authenticator app.

How many passkeys can I set up?

Users can set up at most 6 passkeys for their account.

Does Ramp store any biometric information?

No, Ramp does not have access to the underlying biometric information. The device uses biometric and security hardware to protect the passkey, and Ramp just gets an opaque cryptographic key.

What devices can I use a passkey for?

You can sign up for a passkey on both web and mobile. Below are the minimum versions by OS platform required to support passkey synchronization:

Apple: supported in iOS 16 after September 2022, and iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura after October 2022.
Google: supported in Android after October 2022, and ChromeOS after 2023.
Microsoft: supported in 2023 and throughout 2024.
