User role deep-dive: IT Admin

Overview

The IT Admin is a user role for employees, typically IT teams or developers, who need to manage integrations, provisioning, and account security on Ramp. IT Admins do not have access to the business's spend information and cannot manage spend controls. IT Admins have the same permissions as an employee or cardholder with additional access to edit People, Company Settings, Developer API, and Integrations.

Note: The IT Admin role is available across all Ramp business types, including the Ramp Accounts Payable Product Bundle (AP-only experience).

IT Admins are the direct counterpart to Finance Admins. While Finance Admins manage financial products (expenses, Bill Pay, accounting, treasury), IT Admins focus on user management, integrations, SSO/security, and the Developer API. Together, these roles represent the two most comprehensive areas of administration within Ramp.

What can the IT Admin user do?

IT Admins have all of the access and features of an employee.

On top of employee permissions, IT Admins can also access the following areas of Ramp:

What the IT Admin cannot do

The IT Admin role is intentionally scoped to user management and technology administration. IT Admins do not have access to financial products or spend controls:

IT Admin with manager permissions

When the "Manage a direct team" toggle is enabled for an IT Admin, they gain additional capabilities on top of their standard IT Admin permissions:

Manager permissions give IT Admins limited financial visibility scoped only to their team. They still cannot access company-wide financial data or manage spend controls outside their reporting chain.

To enable Manager permissions for an IT Admin, see Editing a User's Role.

Ramp Plus customization

On Ramp Plus, IT Admin permissions can be customized. For example, you can grant an IT Admin access to accounting integrations or expand their user management capabilities. See Customizing Roles and Permissions for details.

IT Admins can also receive custom add-on roles on Ramp Plus, allowing you to tailor their permissions further.

Frequently asked questions

Can an IT Admin see spending data?

No. IT Admins do not have access to expenses, transactions, or financial data by default. If Manager permissions are enabled, they can see their team's expenses only.

Can an IT Admin invite users with any role?

Yes. IT Admins can send invites to users with any role, including Admin roles. However, they cannot send invites with spend attached (default Spend Programs will still be issued).

Can I customize IT Admin permissions?

Yes, on Ramp Plus. Navigate to Company > Settings > User Roles to customize which permissions the IT Admin role includes. See Customizing Roles and Permissions.

What's the difference between IT Admin and Admin?

Admin is a super-user with full platform access across all financial products and user management. IT Admin focuses on user management, integrations, SSO/security, and the Developer API — without access to financial data. Use IT Admin for your technology team. Use Admin only for trusted operations leaders who need full control.
