Temporary changes to spending limits on your card or funds

Overview

Ramp is designed to be flexible with changes in your business spending. Suppose an upcoming event (such as a team offsite) requires additional spend in the current card cycle. In that case, cardholders may temporarily increase the maximum amount available to spend on their cards or funds.

Temporary increases automatically reset to your original limit at the start of your next spend cycle. Only recurring limits can be temporarily increased. You request a temporary increase from your Ramp dashboard; approvers can review requests in the dashboard or through the Slack integration.

Cardholders

To request a temporary increase:

  1. From your wallet, select the card or funds you want to increase.
  2. Open the More actions (⋯) menu and select Request a temporary increase.
  3. Enter the Additional amount you need and a short reason for your finance team.
  4. Click Request increase.

Your request is sent to your approval chain and reflected in your cards and funds panel. You will receive an email notification once it's approved or rejected. Once approved, the temporary increase automatically resets to your original limit at the start of your next spend cycle.

Physical cards spend from funds, so the increase option appears on the linked funds rather than on the physical card itself. One-time (total) limits can't be temporarily increased — they show Request an increase instead, which is a permanent change. See Spend requests and spending limit increases.

Note: For general cardholders, requests can't be edited after submission. Once a request is approved or rejected, you can submit a new one.

Admins, Owners, and managers

Temporary limit change requests will automatically be brought to your attention and can be approved or rejected in (1) your dashboard or (2) via the Slack integration.

Approving temporary limits in the dashboard

  1. Navigate to “Funds and Cards”
  2. Click the “Requests” button in the upper righthand corner
  3. Click on the limit change request
  4. Note: You can toggle the green switch to choose between a temporary (default) or permanent change for the cardholder
  5. Click “Reject” or “Approve & update”

Approving temporary limits via the Slack integration

If you have the Slack integration installed in your workspace, you will receive a notification from Ramp when limit change requests are made. You will have these 3 options to select from:

  1. Approve & Issue
  2. Approve w/ Temporary Limit
  3. Reject

Applying temporary limits in the dashboard (without a request)

Admins, Owners, and Managers with edit permission can apply a temporary increase immediately:

  1. Select the card or funds you want to change.
  2. Open the More actions (⋯) menu — or the Actions menu on the card or funds detail page — and select Request a temporary increase.
  3. Enter the Additional amount and a reason.
  4. Click Update.

The change applies immediately and automatically resets to the original limit at the start of the next spend cycle. If you are editing your own card or funds and separation of duties is enforced in your company expense policy, the change is routed for approval instead.
