What is 3DS?
3DS stands for 3-D Secure, which is a protocol created by Visa, MasterCard, and other credit card networks to help prevent fraud when customers make online purchases.
3DS uses additional verification measures beyond the standard card number, expiration date, and CVV. It requires customers to authenticate their identity by providing extra information, such as a password or a one-time code sent to their phone. This helps to verify that the customer is a legitimate cardholder and is not someone attempting to make a fraudulent transaction.
By using 3DS, online vendors can reduce the risk of fraudulent purchases and confidently accept payments from their customers. It also helps customers feel secure when making online purchases, knowing that they don't have to worry about their card details being stolen.
Are virtual cards and funds enrolled in 3DS?
Yes, most virtual cards and funds are enrolled in 3DS, which means you should not expect any issues when making purchases with an online vendor that requires 3DS. Remember that Ramp still performs its normal fraud and funds restriction checks and will decline the payment if it is suspicious or violates any of your company's card rules. In this case, you will receive a notification with the decline reason.
Why am I asked to verify transactions?
When shopping online, vendors may request additional information to confirm the transaction is legitimate. This process is known as 3DS or Verified by Visa.
When a vendor requests this information, Ramp sends an SMS to your account asking you to confirm this activity. Once confirmed, the checkout will proceed, and your funds will be charged. If your phone does not receive the SMS, we will send an email as a secondary verification method.
Transactions may still be declined due to category restrictions, merchant restrictions, or spending amounts. Confirming this activity will not override these rules.

Frequently asked questions
Can I disable or turn off 3DS (Visa Secure) verification?
No. 3DS is a mandatory security feature that protects your account from unauthorized transactions. It cannot be disabled by cardholders or business admins. 3DS verification is initiated by the merchant, not by Ramp, so it only appears when the merchant's payment system requires it.
