QuickBooks Desktop sync error: An attempt was made to modify a Bill with a date that is on or before the closing date of the company
Overview
QuickBooks Desktop returns this error when Ramp tries to sync a bill whose date falls on or before your company's closing date:
An error occurred while communicating with QuickBooks Desktop: An attempt was made to modify a Bill with a date that is on or before the closing date of the company.
QuickBooks Desktop protects transactions dated on or before the closing date, which prevents Ramp from writing the bill to that period.
How to resolve
- Open QuickBooks Desktop and go to Edit > Preferences.
- Select Accounting from the left menu.
- Click the Company Preferences tab.
- In the Closing Date section, click Set Date/Password.
- Choose one of the following options:
- Update the bill date in Ramp so it falls after the current closing date. This keeps your closed period protected and does not require any change in QuickBooks Desktop.
- Move the closing date to an earlier date so the bill's date is no longer within the protected period.
- Temporarily remove the closing date password (leave the password field blank), sync the bill, then set the password again. Removing the password lifts closed-period protection for your entire company, so any user can modify closed-period transactions until you restore it.
- Click OK to save your changes.
- Return to Ramp and retry syncing the bill.
Important: Removing the closing date password affects your whole company, not just this bill — it allows changes to any transaction dated on or before the closing date. Prefer updating the bill date in Ramp or moving the closing date, and if you do remove the password, restore it once the sync succeeds.
