Overview
This article covers the following topics: What is 3DS? Are virtual cards and funds enrolled in 3DS? Why am I asked to verify transactions?
What is 3DS?
3DS stands for 3-D Secure, which is a protocol created by Visa, MasterCard, and other credit card networks to help prevent fraud when customers make online purchases.
3DS uses additional verification measures beyond the standard card number, expiration date, and CVV. It requires customers to authenticate their identity by providing extra information, such as a password or a one-time code sent to their phone. This helps to verify that the customer is a legitimate cardholder and is not someone attempting to make a fraudulent transaction.
By using 3DS, online merchants can reduce the risk of fraudulent purchases and confidently accept payments from their customers. It also helps customers feel secure when making online purchases, knowing that they don't have to worry about their card details being stolen.
Are virtual cards and funds enrolled in 3DS?
Yes, most virtual cards and allocated funds are enrolled in 3DS, which means you should not expect any issues when making purchases with an online merchant that requires 3DS. Remember that Ramp still performs its normal fraud and card restriction checks and will decline the payment if it is suspicious or violates any of your company's card rules, in which case you will receive a notification with the decline reason.
Why am I asked to verify transactions?
When shopping online, merchants may request additional information to confirm the transaction is legitimate. This process is known as 3D secure or Verified by Visa.
When a merchant requests this information, Ramp sends an email and SMS to your account asking you to confirm this activity. Once confirmed, the checkout will proceed, and your card will get charged.
Please note: Transactions may still be declined due to category restrictions, merchant restrictions, or spending limits. Confirming this activity will not override these rules. Reach out to our support team if you need further assistance.
